Austria

In Austria, trains of the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) can be used with FIP Tickets. Westbahn and RegioJet also operate long-distance services alongside ÖBB, but cannot be used with FIP Tickets. In journey planners, these are abbreviated as IC or WB (not to be confused with ÖBB’s IC).

There are also other regional operators of local trains that do not accept FIP Tickets. These use the same train categories as ÖBB: RE, REX, and S. If in doubt, check the operator via their website or Bahn.de.

The GySEV / Raaberbahn is a second railway company that accepts FIP Tickets within Austria and Hungary. GySEV FIP Coupons are mainly intended for Hungary and are only valid to a limited extent on GySEV routes in Austria.

On the vagonWeb website, you can search for individual train numbers. However, it is not possible to search for connections. If several trains with the same train number exist, you must select the correct route of the train. Afterwards, the Carrier is displayed. For cross-border connections, multiple operators are shown.

Austria has a dense rail network, mainly consisting of two main lines:

• The Southern Railway: from Vienna via Graz towards Slovenia and Klagenfurt/Villach to Italy (from December 2025 via the new Koralmbahn high-speed line, before via the old route)
• The Western Railway: from Vienna via Salzburg/Innsbruck to Lake Constance (Bregenz) and further to Switzerland (Zurich).

Both lines are well developed, with trains running every half hour between major stations. There are also many scenic main and branch lines, such as the breathtaking Tauern Railway (Salzburg-Villach), Ennstal Railway (Salzburg-Bischofshofen-Schladming-Leoben), or the Brenner Railway (Munich-Innsbruck-Brenner-Bolzano-Verona).

Czech Republic

From the Czech Republic, cross-border trains of České dráhy can be used on various routes. An additional FIP 50 ticket or FIP Coupon from České dráhy is required. Cross-border trains operated by RegioJet cannot be used with FIP. Long-distance connections exist from Linz to Prague and Railjets from Vienna to Prague via Brno.

Slovakia

Arrival from Slovakia is possible via two different regional train connections:

• One connection runs north of the Danube from Bratislava Main Station (Bratislava hl.st.) via Marchegg to Vienna.
• Another connection starts in the south of Bratislava (Bratislava Petrzalka) and runs via Kittsee to Vienna.

For both routes, a FIP 50 Ticket from ŽSR / ZSSK is required for the Slovak section.

Additionally, there are some EC connections.

Hungary

From Hungary, both cross-border regional trains and Eurocity/Railjet trains can be used. On the Vienna-Budapest route via Hegyeshalom, an additional FIP Ticket from MAV is required from the border; in other cases, an additional FIP Ticket from GySEV is needed.

Slovenia

All three existing rail border crossings from Slovenia are served several times a day. From Ljubljana and in some cases even from Croatia, trains can travel via Jesenice to Villach. The connections usually run at least every two hours.

From Maribor, Graz can be reached directly and hourly with long-distance and regional trains via Spielfeld-Strass. Less frequently, and only in regional traffic, the connection between Austrian Bleiburg and Maribor is served. On all routes, ÖBB and SŽ FIP Coupons or a continuous FIP 50 Ticket are required.

Italy

There are two international routes from Italy to Austria:

• The Brenner Railway: with Eurocity trains from Bolzano and Verona via the Brenner Pass and Innsbruck to Munich, as well as S3 trains from Brenner to Innsbruck. Regional trains from Bolzano can also be used to reach Brenner.
• The route via Tarvisio Boscoverde: with Railjets from Venice continuing to Vienna and some regional trains from Trieste to Villach.

When using these routes, the ÖBB FIP Coupon is valid in the Italian section on long-distance trains (EC and RJ), but a surcharge must be paid from the Italian border on both routes (see Trains to Italy).

Liechtenstein

Liechtenstein and Austria are only connected by rarely running trains during the week. These cross-border S-Bahn trains run only during peak hours and are operated by the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB). Therefore, ÖBB FIP Coupons and FIP 50 Tickets are also valid in Liechtenstein.

Otherwise, cross-border traffic is mainly provided by buses, where FIP Tickets are not valid.

Switzerland

Austria and Switzerland have only one main border crossing, at St. Margrethen. Mostly regional trains operate here, but there are also Eurocity trains that only stop in Bregenz on the Austrian side and otherwise run from Germany (Munich).

Entry from Switzerland is also possible via Buchs SG and Feldkirch through Liechtenstein. In Liechtenstein, ÖBB FIP Tickets are valid. This means it is possible to have a continuous ticket between Austria and Switzerland using FIP Coupons from ÖBB and SBB. The main line between the two countries runs here, with Austrian Railjet and Eurocity trains operating between Vienna/Graz and Zurich, as well as regional trains.

Germany

Between Germany and Austria, there are several regional train connections and two long-distance routes:

• an ICE line from Vienna via Linz, Passau, and Nuremberg to Frankfurt/Cologne (and some trains to Berlin)
• ICE, RJ, and IC trains from Munich via Salzburg to various destinations in Austria.

For the German section, a FIP Ticket from DB is required.

Ausserfern Railway

On the Ausserfern Railway route between Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Pfronten-Steinach via Reutte in Tyrol, DB Regio trains operate from Germany to Austria and back to Germany. DB FIP Coupons (and national travel concessions for DB employees) are valid here for the following journeys:

• Direct journeys from Germany via Austria back to Germany (transit travel)
• Journeys that start or end in Germany (cross-border travel)

Journeys that take place entirely within Austria (start and end in Austria) are excluded. ÖBB FIP Coupons are not valid for any journeys on this route.

The rules are analogous to those for the Deutschlandticket or Bahncard 100. ^{1 2}

Overall, Austria has an impeccable infrastructure and scenic routes, and most journeys are operated by ÖBB. This makes it possible to travel a large part of the country with FIP Tickets. However, the surcharge (without reservation) on long-distance trains, regardless of the route (in 1st class € 15, in 2nd class € 10), slightly dampens the FIP experience.
